LifeSmarts Logo


LifeSmarts is an educational program that develops meaningful marketplace skills in teenagers and provides them with a competitive venue to showcase their knowledge. The program complements any curriculum in middle schools and high schools and is used as an activity for classes, groups, clubs, and community organizations. LifeSmarts is a program of the National Consumers League and coordinated locally by state partnering organizations.


  • Online resources: Coaches and players can use the resources available at lifesmarts.org, including complete lesson plans and group activities for coaches, and self-guided lessons in LifeSmarts U, our virtual online classroom.
  • Online competitions: With the support of an adult coach, student players form a team and compete in the LifeSmarts online competition. Quizzes are available in both individual and team formats, with monthly cash prizes for the highest-scoring teams. The 2014 – 15 competition begins in September.
  • State and national championships: Teams with qualifying scores are invited to compete at the state level for the opportunity to reach the National LifeSmarts Championship, in Seattle, Wash., April 17 – 20, 2015.

LifeSmarts is an excellent way for consumer experts to share their knowledge with young adults:

  • Write and review questions: The marketplace is constantly changing, which is why LifeSmarts is always looking for new and updated content. Experts are invited from consumer rights, finance, health, technology, and the environment to submit and review questions for the upcoming competition year. Summer-Fall.
  • Coach a LifeSmarts team: While many teams are based in business or FACS classrooms, any group can form a team: quiz bowl, 4-H clubs, home schools, and church groups have all found success with LifeSmarts. Fall-Winter.
  • National and local volunteers: LifeSmarts depends on volunteers to help recruit teams, raise funds, and staff live competitions. Help is needed at both the state and national level. Year-round, with live competitions occurring February – April.


  • Safety Smart service learning: LifeSmarts and Underwriters Laboratories (UL), offer teens a quick and fun way to fulfill community service requirements, mentor children, and earn prizes and scholarships. Everything needed is already provided: the presentations, the lesson plans, the worksheets, and videos featuring Timon and Pumbaa from Disney’s The Lion King.
  • FBLA Competitive Event: LifeSmarts is also a competitive event with the Future Business Leaders of America. Two students work together to compete online, with top-scoring teams qualifying to compete at the FBLA National Conference.
  • ConsumerMan podcasts: Each month ConsumerMan Herb Weisbaum creates a new video just for LifeSmarts on topics pertinent to teen consumers. Discussion questions and content vocabulary have been for educators.
