05/23/2014 - Children's Financial Network, Inc. and Green$treet Commons, Inc.

The Children’s Financial Network, Inc. and Green$treet Commons, Inc. are located in New Jersey and are owned and operated by Neale S. Godfrey. As a pioneer of the topic of kids and money in the 1980s, Godfrey, the creator of the First Children’s Bank, the Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship in Harlem, the chairman of Children’s Financial Network, Inc., The New York Times #1 Best Selling author of 27 books, and Financial Literacy curricula, believes that it is the job of individuals in the financial industry to teach kids the new language of money. The world of banking has evolved. With the use of cash alternatives, electronic transactions, and bitcoins, actual currency may become a thing of the past.

Kids resonate with video games. These new technologies are a great tool for education, but when kids play they are isolated. Their virtual world needs to connect with the real world. This was the inception of the Green$treets mobile video gaming apps for 5-10 year-olds — teaching the financial facts of life in a different way. Godfrey partnered with Tom Hester, award-winning creator of Shrek, to design the characters of Green$treets, to produce two free iOS apps: Green$treets: Unleash the Loot! and Green$treets: Shmootz Happens! — #1 in the Educational Gaming category. They partnered with Fingerprint Play network, so during game play emails are sent to parents, grandparents and educators to tell them what the kids are learning so they can reinforce the lessons in real life.

Green$treet Commons has teamed with Heifer International to produce the iOS app, Green$treets: Heifer International, available for free from iTunes. Heifer’s mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and care for the Earth.

Heifer helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to historically impoverished areas. Donated animals provide both food and reliable income with products such as milk, eggs and honey.

“I am thrilled Heifer International is collaborating with Green$treets to impress upon children and their families the importance of giving as part of financial literacy,” said Pierre Ferrari, Heifer International’s president and CEO. “Through this creative new game, we can bridge the virtual world of game play with actual giving. I am, of course, excited we will reach a new audience that will be key to bringing an end to hunger and poverty.”

In the app, kids earn money, and have to decide how to allocate it — Charity, Savings, Spending. The concept is unique because the kids virtually earn and save money to buy Heifer animals in game play, and parents can actually donate to Heifer International and send real animals to villages via click-through emails to Heifer's website. We are empowering kids to understand the impact of their own money. Can you imagine a game kids will love that is more than mindless play?

We are looking to partner with financial institutions looking to open real, multi-generational accounts for parents and their kids. We want to create a living allowance for kids to Earn, Save, Spend, and Share.
